Contactless Credential Reader Support in IDpack with HID OMNIKEY 5427CK

Fast, secure, and touch-free identification

IDpack supports the HID OMNIKEY 5427CK Credential Reader in Keyboard Wedge (KBW) mode, enabling seamless contactless reading directly within Producer. This setup streamlines badge production and identity verification with speed, accuracy, and minimal configuration.

While the OMNIKEY 5427CK is our recommended reader, IDpack also works with most contactless smart card readers that support keyboard emulation (KBW), offering flexibility across a variety of devices.

How contactless reading works in IDpack

IDpack fully supports the HID OMNIKEY 5427CK Reader

The OMNIKEY 5427CK from HID is a USB reader that emulates keyboard input. When a Contactless Card is scanned, its unique ID appears instantly in the correct field in Producer. This eliminates manual entry and speeds up workflows.

The reader is compatible with a wide range of credential types, including Prox Cards, mobile credentials (such as Apple Wallet or Google Wallet), smart cards, keyfobs, clamshell cards, and standard Contactless Cards.

  1. Connect the OMNIKEY 5427CK to a USB port
  2. Follow the setup guide to configure the reader in Keyboard Wedge mode and JSON output:
    https://www.idpack.cloud/docs/designer/contactless-card-reader-rfid/
  3. Launch Producer, select a project, then choose a record
  4. Tap a Contactless credential on the reader
  5. The credential’s CSN is captured and entered automatically

This method is fast, contactless, and ideal for high-traffic environments.

Where it’s used

  • Access control – Register and validate entry credentials
  • Events – Simplify attendee check-in and badge creation
  • Workplaces – Manage employee and visitor identity efficiently

Use Case #1 – Connect IDpack to external systems

IDpack can transmit Contactless credential data to third-party platforms using its API and Webhooks. Once a Card Serial Number (CSN) is stored, it can be sent to systems like KRONOS (UKG Ready), PaperCut, rf IDEAS, or any REST-enabled service.

Example: KRONOS integration

  1. A staff member creates a new record in Producer
  2. A Contactless credential is scanned and its CSN is stored
  3. A Webhook automatically sends the CSN to the KRONOS API
  4. KRONOS updates its database and activates the card
  5. The employee can walk to the door, present their credential to the reader, and the door will unlock.

All this in a matter of minutes.

Use Case #2 – Check In / Check Out with real-time attendance

Once a Contactless credential is linked to a record, scanning it retrieves that record automatically. This is especially useful with the Check In / Check Out feature.

  1. The RFID credential is scanned at an entry or exit point
  2. Producer instantly finds the linked record
  3. The person is marked as checked in or checked out with a timestamp
  4. The status can also be adjusted manually by an operator
  5. Attendance data is logged in real time, without any manual lookup

This setup is ideal for classrooms, training centers, trade shows, and secure facilities where accurate attendance matters.

Use Case #3 – Integration with industry-specific systems

The CSN from each card can be sent to almost any application that supports an API or webhook. This enables integration with industry-specific tools for access, identity, and tracking.
